Sulfur Trioxide Absorption Tower

The absorption unit of a sulfuric acid plant: SO3 gas leaving the converter is absorbed in circulating concentrated sulfuric acid (normally 98–99% H2SO4) to produce concentrated sulfuric acid or oleum. Sulfur Trioxide Absorption Tower is the absorption unit of a sulfuric acid plant. The SO3 gas leaving the converter is brought into contact with circulating concentrated sulfuric acid (normally 98–99% H2SO4) in the tower, where it is absorbed and combines with the acid to form concentrated sulfuric acid or oleum. Absorption in concentrated acid instead of water or dilute acid is the key design point of the tower, because SO3 reacting with water forms a stable acid mist that is extremely difficult to collect.

Absorption Tower Equipment is a type of equipment used to remove pollutants from gases or liquids, and its functions mainly include the following aspects: removal of pollutants, by contacting the pollutants in gases or liquids with absorbents through absorption, adsorption, chemical reaction and other methods and converting them into harmless substances; separation of components, using the solubility differences of different components in the absorbent, for example separating hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide from petroleum gas; and recycling of resources, such as recovering organic solvents or valuable substances from waste gas.

For sulfur trioxide duty the tower is normally a vertical vessel with acid-resistant brick or ceramic lining on a carbon steel shell, or is fabricated in stainless steel or acid-resistant alloy when the duty requires it. The packing is acid-proof ceramic — Pall rings, Raschig rings, saddles or structured packing — and the acid is distributed uniformly over the packing, recirculated by acid pumps and cooled in external acid coolers to control the absorption temperature. The gas leaves through a mist eliminator, such as a candle filter, to keep the acid mist and the SO2 / SO3 content of the tail gas within the emission limit.

Gas flow rate, tower diameter and height, packing type and height, acid concentration and circulation rate, lining and material, and the instrument and control scheme are customized according to the plant capacity, the SO3 concentration at the converter outlet and the required product (concentrated acid or oleum). ISO, ASME, GOST or other third-party certification is available upon request.
